In case you have been living under a rock for the past several years, “The Jersey Shore” is an MTV reality show that chronicles the life and times of young beach goers who live together in a small home near the infamous Jersey Shore. Basically, the entire show consists of these young people drinking as much alcohol as they can handle and then watching them stagger down to the local clubs and bars to try and hookup with one another. For any individual with an addictive personality, this type of scenario is a recipe for disaster. One of the main characters on the show is a young man named Mike Sorrentine. Mike, who early in the show bestowed upon himself the moniker “The Situation”, happens to be a person with an addictive personality. Unfortunately, over the years he has filmed the popular program, he has developed a serious addiction to prescription pain pills.
Prescription Drug Abuse
Prescription drug abuse is a growing epidemic in our country, and many young people are falling victim to the disease of addiction. In the case of Mike, his addiction was on display for the entire country to see. This cannot be an easy thing to endure. People mocked and ridiculed the young man for his erratic behavior on the show. However, at the time, most people did not know that it was not just alcohol he was abusing. When people take prescription pain medications in conjunction with alcohol, the results can be disastrous.
Current Season
Thankfully, before the filming began on this season’s episodes of The Jersey Shore, Mike underwent treatment and counseling at a prescription drug treatment center. He successfully completed the program, and he and those close to him say that he has never looked or felt better about himself. Still, many people are concerned that he is headed back to the same place and scenario that caused him to get into trouble in the first place. The main theme of the upcoming season, which is currently being filmed, is whether or not he will be able to maintain his new found sobriety in the midst of all the madness surrounding him. Hopefully, his roommates on the show will support him and help him stay on the path to recovery. However, anyone who has ever watched the show before knows this probably will not be the case. The people in the house pride themselves on imbibing ridiculous amounts of alcohol and staying out till all hours at bars and nightclubs. This is certainly not the ideal living situation for someone who is so early in their recovery.
Hopefully, Mike will be able to block out all of the craziness around him and focus on staying sober. Many are questioning his decision to go back on the show that fostered his problem, yet he swears he can make it work. For most people, going back to the enviornment that led to their addiction ends with disastrous results. It is very easy to fall back into the same patterns of drug and alcohol abuse, especially when you are surrounded by enablers. If you or someone you know is struggling with an addiction to prescription drugs, have them seek help from a medical professional as soon as possible.
