Canon ImageClass D860 – A Superb Printer For Everyday Office Work

May 7, 2009 by garrett · Leave a Comment

General specs- The Canon ImageClass D860 digital, copier printer is great for both home and office use with its small footprint measurements of 24.5×17.5×15 inches and weight of 53 pounds. The device employs laser, monochrome print technology. The concept behind laser printer operation is the usage of rotating mirrors and a laser beam to reflect images indirectly onto a photo conducting drum. The Canon ImageClass D860 Toner is then attracted to the image and melted at a high temperature onto the paper.

Print quality- Overall print quality is very good. Text and simple graphics quality is excellent with clear and crisp characters with no smearing or blemishing. Complicated graphics and photo printing on the other hand is average in quality. Prints are produced at 600×600 dpi and copies up to 1200×600 dpi with maximum engine speeds of up to 16 pages per minute and copies 18 pages per minute.

Media handling- The machine is a little fussy in terms of paper size and type, only accepting letter, legal, A4 sizes and plain, colour, transparencies, bond and labels paper types. The standard media capacity is 500 sheets and bypass feeder 100 sheets. The automatic document feeder has a 30 page capacity. Copies can be enlarged up to 200% and reduced to 78 %. Multi-page documents will be collated in your output tray. With this machine paper jams are something of the past. In a three month period users have report no jamming whatsoever. The device is so versatile that it can handle low and high volumes with the same ease.

OS Systems and connectivity- Both Parallel and USB interfacing options are employed as the connection between printer and computer. The only secret to successful installation is to wait for the installation wizard to prompt connection. The printer originally had USB version 1.1 connectivity which was terribly slow. Designers have upgraded the USB to version 2.0 with bandwidth of 480 Mbp’s. Unfortunately, the printer copier is only compatible with Windows operating systems. This limit’s the devices’ appeal to Apple Mac and Linux users.

Pro’s- The machines’ greatest advantages are the incredible speed and ease of copying and printing, paper jamming is non-existent and last but not least the copier printer is excellently priced between US$229 and US$333.00. Truly a long-term, hassle-free investment.

Con’s- The printers’ disadvantages are few and far between. You will really have to dissect and inspect the machine from top to bottom to find really insignificant flaws. The copier printer has some compatibility issues especially with Windows XP operating system. Overall configuration can be a headache sometimes.

Warranty- A three year warranty is included with your purchase. However you should take note that coverage is limited in terms of service and support.

Toner- Starter Canon ImageClass D860 toner is included with your online or in store purchase with a print capacity of 3500 pages. Replacement cartridges yield 4000+ pages and retails for approximately US$133.00. The devices’ toner is easily the cheapest on the market making the Toner a great buy.
