Elsinore – An Interesting And Beautiful City On The Sea

by erin on July 25, 2011

Elsinore might ring a bell in your head, and if you can’t remember where you have heard it before, think all the way back to high school English and reading Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Helsingør, Denmark, known as Elsinore in English, is located on the island of Zealand. If a vacation is in your future, but you haven’t decided exactly where to travel yet, look into Elsinore. You will have to get a passport though. If you are one of those who has ever wondered how to get a passport fast, there is a way, and it’s online.

Passport Renewal

The passport acquisition process can be a huge pain, as those who have ever done it probably know. Renewing US passport, getting a passport renewal, and other even more tricky services can be frustrating, but you now have the option of doing it online. Online passport services make the anxiety surrounding passports disappear, as it is all there for you to fill out on the computer. Expedited service means you pick the day you want your passport to arrive, meaning planning a vacation has never been easier.

Kronburg Castle

The most well-known and most visited attraction in Elsinore is Kronburg Castle. This is the very castle setting where Shakespeare’s Hamlet unfolded. If you are lucky, you might see it being performed in the courtyard of Kronburg Castle, something that only happens every few years. This castle, deemed one of the most important and most impressive Renaissance castles in the entirety of Europe, is an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. A very interesting prophecy surrounds the statue of Ogier the Dane, which is found in the Castle. It is said that if the country were ever to fall into extreme danger, Ogier would awaken and rescue the country. Also be sure to see the ancient chapel and the luxurious ball room. The castle itself is perched on a cliff overlooking a small inlet to the Baltic Sea, and only four kilometers across the water is Sweden. As you could imagine, this makes it a very important strategic position.

City Center

Both tourists and locals enjoy taking the ferry across the strait to Elsinore’s twin city, Helsingborg, Sweden. Start in Elsinore’s City Centre if you are looking for a place to begin, mostly because it has the highest concentration of beautiful old buildings, contorted cobblestone streets, and several other important landmarks. Visit the City Museum if you are interested in learning about some of the long and fascinating history of Denmark. Another option is the Technical Museum of Denmark, which displays all the revolutionary technical and scientific achievements of Denmark.

Tours And Fishing

Many people aren’t aware of how popular a fishing destination Elsinore is. Tour boats and fishing charter boats are always floating in the harbor, waiting to take anyone out and introduce them to the popular Elsinore tradition of fishing. Also be sure to visit some of the gorgeous beaches, especially during the summer. The harbor has recently been made more of a cultural center, and is a great place to spend an afternoon. The Shipyard Museum is located here, and it displays the long maritime history of Denmark.

Shakespeare

Elsinore certainly isn’t short on beauty, and it is a great place to travel to if you are a fan of interesting cities, Shakespeare, or history. During your stay in Elsinore, also be sure to take the one-hour train ride to Copenhagen. Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and is full of other fun things to do. You now know how to get a passport fast, so get your vacation started. Log onto a passport expediting site where renewing US passport and more is possible.
