by erin on January 25, 2010

The HP Color LaserJet 5550n printer is a printer that has been designed for use by a large workgroup or by an entire office. The printer carries a high price but offers a great speed for printing graphics. It is an excellent option for persons that make lots of color prints.

Documents that are prepared with this printer are all high in quality. It does equally well when printing text, monochrome graphics or color prints.  The black prints offer very smooth transitions as well as very good fine detail with toner on hand. When used to prepare color prints, this machine makes prints that have great detail as well as colors, which are vibrant and rich without sacrificing a realistic quality. While the machine produces color prints at a relatively fast 5.6 ppm, text-printing speeds are only average at only 16.4 ppm.

The machine was originally designed for use with Windows XP. HP says that the current version is designed for use with Windows 7 and that using with older versions of Windows may cause the printer to lose some of its functionality. With the changes in the programs, it is likely that there will be little if any loss of function.

Although setup of this printer is fairly easy, it may take longer than setting up other printers. Most likely, any version of Windows you are using will recognize the printer. It is actually the installation of the drivers that will take the additional time.

As standard equipment, the printer comes equipped with a couple of paper trays. The standard drawer holds five hundred sheets of letter-sized paper. The MP tray is designed to hold up to one hundred sheets of paper. This tray an accept sheets that vary in size to the tabloid size. Three additional trays can be added. Each of these trays can hold another five hundred sheets. This expands to twenty-one hundred sheets of paper the number of sheets that can be held.

The standard memory installed on the printer has 160 MB. The RAM can be expanded to 544 MB. The processor is a 533 MHz and a 20 GB hard drive is an option for storing watermarks or other frequently used documents. These documents can be chosen and printed directly from the console.

As with most other laser printers, the HP Color LaserJet 5550n printer makes copies for a lower cost than for similar prints using an ink jet printer. The prints made using a laser printer are waterproof and will not be ruined if it accidentally comes in contact with water or in high humidity. The prints are produced quickly and are crisp and clean.

While you may pay substantially more for this printer than you would pay for an ink jet printer, you will find that it can be used to serve all the computers in your work group. Many large work groups find that the HP Color LaserJet 5550n printer can handle their biggest workloads. It gives great image quality no matter what is being printed and makes a great reliable choice that will last for several years. Your printer will need HP Color LaserJet 5550n toner.  Toner cartridges can be found online as well as in stores, however, the best deals on toner are usually online.
