Information Regarding Getting A Passport

Anyone interested in traveling to another country must have a passport. One cannot enter or leave any country without one. When getting a passport, it will be necessary to give one’s name, sex, date and place of birth (which includes country), social security number and two current pictures. The ordinary passport is good for a period of ten years. If one needs to renew a passport, they can fill in a form on the Internet and print it out. They then must mail the form, two pictures, their old passport and the fee to the National Passport Processing Center in Philadelphia.

There are a number of passports that are issued depending on the type required. Mainly they are Ordinary, Official, Diplomatic, Emergency, Collective, and Family. The Ordinary passport, also called Tourist or Regular, is the one most citizens carry. The others involve particular circumstances and each has its own special coverage. The highest year for the issuance of passports was 2007 when over eighteen million United States passports were issued.

The Family passport is issued when a family is traveling together with one adult named as the passport holder. A family member cannot use it unless the passport holder is present. This is a very convenient passport for a family going on a trip as they will be entering and leaving the foreign country together.

The Collective passport is very interesting. They are issued for special groups traveling together to a foreign country. These are often issued for children on a school trip or groups of students going to a foreign country to help with relief or missionary projects. The leader is named as the card holder.

Things have improved greatly over the years in applying for a passport. With the great number of people now traveling and with the security precautions there has been a greater demand for them and service has improved. They can be obtained at any post offices, most county recorders offices and via the Internet. In addition, one can get the passport under emergency conditions on the same day or within twenty-four hours.

Some people are confused regarding the difference between a Visa and a passport. A Visa is issued by the country a person is visiting to allow them to enter the country and remain for a specified period. A Visa is obtained from that country’s embassy or consulate before proceeding on the journey. It does not take the place of the passport.

The State Department has a department called the Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management (ACS). This office furnishes Consular Information. It works with our embassies and consulates overseas in providing emergency services for American travelers. This has been of great help for people who find themselves in unusual circumstances.

There are a number of non-emergency passports services, but the most important are assisting in getting a deceased body home, assisting crime victims and trying to help people who are arrested. They also have a loan program to assist destitute citizens return home. They are in existence to help people who are overseas who run into difficulties getting a passport and are a lifeline for citizens in a foreign country.
