Is It Possible That Mermaids Exist?

by erin on August 14, 2012

Mermaids have been prevalent in pop culture for many years. However, only recently have researchers and scientists discovered that the possible existence of mermaids may not be as farfetched as we previously thought. Can you imagine being on a Panama fishing charter, hunting for black marlin, and hooking an actual, living mermaid? Recently, the Discovery Channel aired a special titled “Mermaids: The Body Found” that shows a young boy living out this exact experience. The video, already the cause of much internet uproar, may or may not be real. However, that has not stopped the topic from becoming one of the most widely searched on the internet recently. Is it possible that these sea creatures, which were once thought to be purely mythical, are real?

What Scientists Say

The Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Organization has entered into the discussion, issuing a statement that said, “No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found.” That is a fairly declarative statement that has some in the scientific community arguing over whether or not the term “aquatic humanoid” is a good one. Say for example, if you believe in evolution (which a great majority of the scientific community does), is it so hard to imagine a species that existed that was part human part fish? If it is true, as evolutionary theory would attest, that we all originated from some sort of ooze that crept out of the ancients oceans, it is certainly possible to theorize that at some point in time mermaids existed on this planet.

Strange Creatures

It should be noted that the mermaids that the Discovery Channel are talking about are not your Disney movie’s mermaids. They are not wearing seashell bras and sporting sparkling green fins. Instead, the mermaid that is supposedly shown in the promotional video of the program resembles something more likely to be found in a horror film. The series hypothesizes that it was the United States Navy, conducting solar blast experiments out in the deep sea, that disturbed a number of these mermaids and caused them to come to shore to escape the incredibly loud sounds. As you can imagine, the United States Navy was not readily available to comment on this accusation.

Whether or not you believe that there is a group of half human, half fish like creatures living on our planet is irrelevant. It is incumbent upon individuals to think for themselves, review the facts, and figure out for themselves what the truth is. It appears that while there are only a few brave minds in the scientific community that thinks the possibility of mermaid like creatures is not outrageous, the number of those who are opening their ears to the arguments are increasing. This is because once you understand evolutionary theory, the prospects of strange species does not seem that unbelievable. So, if one day you are out on a panama fishing charter looking for black marlin, and see something strange in the water that looks like a mermaid, don’t be too quick to dismiss what your eyes showed you!
