Shaun White Arrested In Nashville For Vandalism, Public Intoxication

by AdamS on September 19, 2012

In the early morning hours this past Sunday, two time olympic gold medalist and X Games superstar, Shaun “The Flying Tomato” White was arrested outside the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel.  White was arrested the hotel around 2 am and charged with intoxication and vandalism, having caused a scene at the hotel that night.  White had to be taken to the hospital before he was booked because he suffered a black eye during an altercation with another hotel guest who tried to stop the snowboarder from fleeing the scene.  This is apparently not the first time White has acted out recklessly after drinking, however it is his first arrest.  He may need to check himself into a residential rehab program in order to get his bad drinking habits under control, or at least seek help from an aftercare program such as AA for a little while.

The Hotel Incident

According to police affidavits and witness testimony, Mr. White appeared to be very intoxicated and was causing trouble around the hotel.  He reportedly got drunk and thought it would be fun to pull the fire alarm at the hotel.  Following the alarm the hotel had to be evacuated until fire rescue workers gave the notice that it was a false alarm.  After pulling the alarm, White tried to flee the scene but was chased down by another patron of the hotel and during a minor altercation, suffered a  black eye from a collision with the man.  When police arrived, they offered white the opportunity to sign a written citation for a misdemeanor, but he refused and was then issued an arrest warrant and taken to the police station to be processed.  White was released on Monday afternoon on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court on October 10 to face his misdemeanor charges, which will likely just be a fine.

White’s Apology

Following his release from jail, White issued an apology early Tuesday morning to all his friends,  family members, and fans.  He posted this statement to his Facebook page:”I want to apologize for the unwise choices I made over the weekend and for any inconvenience it caused my family, friends, business partners, the hotel, and their guests. I was celebrating a happy occasion with a ton of family and friends and got carried away. I’m truly sorry for my poor behavior.” Getting carried away is an understatement considering the entire hotel had to be evacuated at 2 in the morning.

This recent arrest was White’s first, however this behavior is all too familiar with famous young athletes and hollywood stars.  Around the same time White was in jail, Amanda Bynes was having her car taken away from her after several incidents in the last few months.  Young stars are really getting cracked down on for drug and alcohol abuse these days and cops are not giving nearly as many special privileges as they did years ago.  Hopefully White will seek residential rehab or an aftercare program to get help with his issues.
