‘Smiles’ – The New Teen Drug Craze

by AdamS on September 14, 2012

Recently, teenagers in the north western states have been experimenting with a new psychedelic drug called 2C-I or more colloquially referred to as ‘Smiles’. Smiles has become a real problem in places like North Dakota and Minnesota, where the rates of teens overdosing and dying after using the drug have been raising drastically. 2C-I is a synthetic hallucinogen that has really profound effects on its users. Many will have to go to Florida addiction treatment centers and get substance abuse treatment. Until very recently the drug was not really available in the United States and was confined to Europe, but now “hobby chemists” are manufacturing it in America. This new drug is now responsible for at least two teen deaths within the past month. Most recently, a male teenager in East Grand Forks, North Dakota overdosed on the drug and collapsed. He was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the emergency room.

Dangerous New Synthetic Drug

Smiles is another synthetic drug, which have been becoming a real problem in the United States for the last few years. Between spice, bath salts, and these 2C drugs, lawmakers and police have had trouble keeping up with all the new substances people are using. Smiles was first chemically synthesized by a chemist named Alexander Shulgin, who also discovered the rest of the 2C drugs. 2C-I is probably the most popular of the drugs in the 2C family. Users report that the drug causes them to feel euphoric and experience hallucinations. In July 2012, 2C-I was labeled a Schedule I controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration, making it illegal to produce, use or distribute the drug.

Devastating Side Effects

There are many very unpleasant side effects of taking Smiles. The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and excessive sweating. Some users experience terrifying hallucinations and have “bad trips” that can last for more than a day. The fear and anxiety associated with these hallucinations can disturb people for the rest of their lives if the reaction is severe enough. The other problem with the 2C drugs is that unlike other hallucinogens such as LSD or psilocybin, 2Cs also have stimulating effects similar to amphetamines. This means that users of 2C-I can also experience heart attacks and seizures which is how many of the people end up dying from the drug. The other danger from 2Cs is they are completely synthetic, meaning the drug has to be made by using a mixture of chemicals which can become very unsafe since most times, users have no idea if they bought what they asked for or something much more dangerous.

With a name like Smiles, it’s very easy to assume that the drug is harmless and many teens have mistakenly believed just that. 2C-I is a very dangerous new drug and which has caused the death of several teens in the United States recently. People using this drug will likely need to go to addiction treatment centers and get treated for substance abuse.
