The Budget Brother HL 5050 Printer

by erin on April 2, 2009

The Brother HL 5050 printer is another winner from Brother. There are two things that are going in the right direction for this printer.

The first is its low price tag and the second is the rather compact footprint. This in turn means that this printer is a great fit for tight budget and crowded workspaces of small offices. This printer produces top quality monochrome prints at break neck speeds. It also has the ability to print on both sides of the paper. It’s built in network capability means that it can easily be connected to an existing office’s or home’s network.

Out of the box I would say that this printer is a winner especially for those people who are looking for a bargain. This is a bargain size printer with lots of good printing ability. The text printed were surprisingly good and crisp.

The Brother HL 5050 comes standard with a 250 sheet tray in its base. There is another tray at its front panel which holds another 50 sheets. This can either be used as a secondary tray to either feed envelopes. You can even stack them high this is one attractive feature if you print lots of envelops. However the printer does not have a rear exit for the paper so there are chances that your paper will come out a bit creased at the edges.

However at this price the built-in duplexer is one attractive feature. If you need more paper you can attach two more optional paper trays. Each of these trays has a capacity of 250 sheets and attach to the bottom of the printer.

Now right next to the 150 sheet output bin there is a control panel that has two buttons and four lights. The printer lacks an LCD based menu however it’s so easy to use and enter in network parameters. You won’t really notice the lack of an LCD based menu. The colorful booklet that accompanies the printer makes setting up and troubleshooting your printer a chinch. Apart from the booklet you get no other documentation. The CD-Rom that you get with the printer will visually illustrate how to setup and your printer. If you still need more help you can download Brother’s set of useful network administration tools for free from their website.

This printer can output excellent quality text that is both crisp and sharp. However we did notice a few oddities in a few of the characters. Line art and other types of light graphics printed out perfectly. The printer has excellent monochrome text capability which is what really sets this laser printer apart.

Replacing the Brother HL 5050 Toner was as easy as pulling out the drum assembly. The drum assembly is located in the front of the printer. The printer comes pre-fitted with a standard capacity toner cartridge which should last you for over 3000 pages. However you can save some money if you purchase a high capacity cartridge for an extra $100 which can print around 7000 pages.  For more information, check out our site http://www.qtoner.us.
