What to Think About When Preparing for College

by erin on January 8, 2010

Preparing for college is a daunting task for every student because there are so many different aspects to consider. The process should begin early on in high school with the help of a school counselor or an advisor who is qualified to give students guidance during the selection and application process. The difficulty in choosing a school and planning for post secondary is not that information is scarce or impossible to find, but that information is plentiful and overwhelming and quite difficult to connect into one coherent plan.

Another difficulty is that there is so much to keep in mind when selecting a school. Even when a student has a specific school in mind and has completed the application process, there is still quite a hill to climb. Most schools will expect prospective students to peruse their course catalogues and to have their courses chosen. It’s not as simple as just choosing the courses that are appealing. Courses must be selected according to credits, keeping in mind how many are needed in each semester in order to be considered a full-time student and to retain any scholarships that may have been offered.

A good class schedule for a large university has an appropriate amount of time between each class to give the student time to walk from one building to another. Don’t forget to plan an hour off in between for lunch. Registering for courses online makes the process a little simpler because the program will not allow a student to schedule courses too close together.

Other than choosing courses, a prospective student has to consider whether or not they are going to live on-campus or off-campus. On-campus accommodations require the student to submit an application for a fee. Living on-campus has its benefits and a lot of universities encourage their first-year students to try this option. For a lot of students this can mean living away from home for the first time, though it is not always a financially prudent option.

Most students do not have the means to pay for college straight out of the gate and they end up with massive debts by the time they’ve graduated. Fortunately most school websites are quite upfront about the costs of college life and prospective students can add up and evaluate how much money they will need to pay for college. If the information is not right on the website, it will be just a phone call or two away. There are many student loan options out there that must be researched in order to avoid massive debt. Also keep in mind that there are several different organizations that give out scholarships, most of which require students to fill out an application. There are scholarships for different religious factions, for disabilities, for sports – almost every category is covered.

Above all, the most important thing to keep in mind when preparing for college is to know inside and out who you are as a person and what you want to get out of life. Then take to the Internet, order catalogues from schools and see an advisor who can help you put the pieces together. Think about what your needs are financially and organize the appropriate applications before the deadlines come up. Look into these applications before you ever need to use them so that nothing comes as a surprise. Most importantly, do not forget to enjoy yourself in college because it will be over before you know it.
